Red Yerba Mate Health Smoothie

Yerba Mate is good for you, whether you’re just gaining momentum on sticking to your New Years’ resolutions or have been maintaining a healthy lifestyle for a while now – if you’ve never encountered this super plant, you two should meet and make some introductions. Millions of people in South America do not wake up to the smell of coffee in the morning, they wake up to a brew of yerba mate, and with good reason. It’s as strong as coffee, it’s a great mood booster and has a lot of antioxidants. This year, we introduced yerba mate in a condensed powder form, so instead of brewing using an infuser, it is prepared in a similar manner you would prepare Matcha. That said, drinking it like a Matcha is not the only way to consume it. Putting it in your foods is another good way, especially if you would like to mask the strong taste while still reaping the health benefits.

This post is about a beautiful vibrant health shake or ‘green smoothie’. We admit that smoothies and health juices are overly marketed as magical super foods that can help you lose weight, but it is really a fast and easy way to consume health foods when you are not an avid cook. If you pair it with a light snack it is actually an entire meal replacement. Generally speaking, it’s good idea to eat seasonally in order to enjoy variety in your diet and get more food for your buck, so we are presenting a smoothie full of winter fruits and vegetables.

The beetroot is lovely this time of year, sadly it does not seem to get the attention it deserves – it is full of iron and it boosts up mental and physical performance so it seems like it is the perfect partner for yerba mate. As a bonus, a lot of supermarkets are now selling them ready cooked and peeled so it really reduces the hassle involved. Kale is also in abundance at the moment and a good source of protein. No need to rant about the health benefits of the good old reliable apple or grapefruit. Both are relatively cheap to buy right now and work really well with this smoothie in particular.

Consider pairing this with a light lunch at work to keep you focused throughout the day.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 tsp Love Tea Green Yerba Mate Matcha
  • 1/2 Beetroot (cooked and diced)
  • 50 g Kale (shredded)
  • 1 Medium Apple (peeled and diced)
  • 1 Grapefruit
  • 1 glass of Water
  • 1 tsp of Honey (optional)

METHOD

Put all of the ingredients in the smoothie blender including the yerba mate powder. Add water and honey as necessary to get the desired consistency and sweetness.
